About the project
Project Sanlaap works in three red-light areas of Kolkata, covering 5,332 children. A large section of the population here is engaged in prostitution, with limited access to adequate health and sanitation facilities. While most children in the intervention area are enrolled in schools, retention remains a major challenge due to limited parental support, poor home learning environments, and chronic financial hardship. Adolescent girls are particularly vulnerable to sex work, trafficking, and increasingly, digital forms of exploitation. Boys face the constant threat of migration for work, while girls are at heightened risk of sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, child marriage, elopement, school dropouts, substance abuse, and early sexual exposure.
Making a difference
CRY America’s Project Sanlaap works to uphold the rights and dignity of children by rescuing them from, or preventing them from falling into, migration, trafficking, child marriage, child labor, and substance abuse. Vulnerable children are provided with learning and counseling support, helping them reintegrate with their families and eventually access mainstream schooling. The project also works with Village-Level Child Protection Committees and Gram Panchayat-Level Child Protection Committees to strengthen local child protection mechanisms. In addition, the project monitors children in the community and promotes awareness of rights, protection, and education through Children’s Collectives that encourage peer support and leadership among children.
The way forward
● Conduct 7 community awareness programs for local communities to sensitize them on child rights, education, and protection.
● Conduct 140 creative activities with children’s collectives to build confidence, leadership, and self-expression among children.
● Hold 4 capacity-building and sensitization workshops with stakeholders and service providers, and 2 sessions with the PLCPC (Panchayat Level Child Protection Committee) to strengthen child protection mechanisms.
● Ensure the retention of all 600 children in schools.
